Views from the bay.

Views from the bay.

Over the Easter weekend the weather gods decided that Caerfai should get some lovely sun and calm seas to allow for some decent rowing in the bay.  We row weekly most of the year, weather permitting, but usually out from Porthgain harbour (7 miles up the coast) or Goodwick (dodging the Fishguard/Rosslare ferry). The ‘we’ is Porthgain rowing club and we row in wooden 32 ft, 6 oared Cornish pilot gig boats. It’s always great to get out on the water but its especially fun to row past your home and tell family to look out the...

Victory in Campaign to save St Davids Secondary School from Closure.

Victory in Campaign to save St Davids Secondary School from Closure.

I am sure if you have ever visited St Davids you will have noticed, as far as cities go, it’s SMALL!  Indeed as many will remind you it is Britain’s smallest of cities.  Plans to close our secondary school, therefore, were seen by many local people to be catastrophic to the well being and vitality of St Davids itself.  Four generations of my family (so far) have gone to Ysgol Dewi Sant. My grandfather, back in the very early days of its very existence attended, regularly bringing beer to school; “is that beer...

Caerfai Farm now using 100% renewable energy.

As you may or may not know, Caerfai, for many years (40, give or take), has been using renewable energy systems. However, there was a time in the long distant past when dad (Wyn) was told by the bank manager; when enquiring into a possible loan to fund an anaerobic digester,  to “go find out more information”.  He did, and now there isn’t a month that goes by that doesn’t yield at least one email from a Phd student requesting help with their research as they’d heard “he was a bit of an expert”. From...

Grass cutting

Grass cutting

As the days get shorter the cows have less fresh grazing.  Dad and Graham, the herdsman, get around this by cutting a strip of grass to feed to them each day.  Here’s a quick video (taken by dad multitasking!) cutting some red clover and rye grass for the cow’s supper. Click on the’ Grass cutting at Caerfai ‘link to view....

Storm

Storm

We had a big storm with some high winds a few weeks back.  This is a video compiled from a few videos that both dad (Wyn), and I (Linda) shot over the space of about an hour.  A lesson learnt (hopefully) that you shouldn’t keep your kayaks on the beach once autumn really starts to kick in.  Apologies for the shaky camera work… it was windy! The super pod!

The Pembrokeshire coastline is always impressive, but sometimes it’s amazing!  A large ‘super pod’ of over 500 dolphins were spotted earlier this week just off the coast a few miles north of St Davids. Click on the link below to have a look. Dolphin spotting off the Pembrokeshire coast.
